Repeaters and Remote Bases
Used During the Cuckoo Net:

We usually link two other repeaters to the K6TZ repeater during the Cuckoo net, using the remote bases capabilities of these repeaters.  The KD6OVS repeater on Gibraltar Peak (146.700 minus offset) has a 220 MHz remote that we link to the K6TZ repeater on La Cumbre Peak (224.080 minus offset).  We use the 2 meter remote on the La Cumbre repeater to link to K6TZ on La Vigia Hill.  Please see the diagram below for details.  Essentially, this "daisy-chains" the repeaters together allowing users to talk on any repeater, and they are then heard on all of the repeaters.

Some things to keep in mind when using the linked repeaters:

  • The linked repeaters extend the range of the Cuckoo Net.  As an example, the 224.080 repeater on La Cumbre Peak has very wide range, including north of the Santa Ynez Mountains.  So, feel free to join the net, even if you are away from Santa Barbara.

  • It takes a moment after you start transmitting for all of the repeaters to turn on.  Please wait as much as three seconds after you start transmitting before you start talking.

  • The remote bases pick up stations talking on other more distant repeaters.  On the 146.700 and 224.080 repeaters, you will often hear conversations from out of the area.  You can talk over these conversations, since they cannot hear us, and we are NOT interfering with their communications.

This graphic is a block diagram of three repeaters superimposed over a map of the Santa Barbara area. Arrows indicate that the 146.700 repeater on Gibraltar Peak is linked to the 224.080 repeater on La Cumbre Peak, which in turn is linked to the 146.790 repeater on La Vigia Hill.
